About

The purpose of the Oxford Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers is to bring together those interested in textiles and in textile making by providing a forum for meeting others who are interested in the subject and providing opportunities to widen their knowledge and skills as well as offering a chance to exhibit their work in public.

We meet monthly on the 3rd Saturday of the month, except in August, at the Village Hall, Stanton St John, Oxfordshire where parking is easy and visitors are most welcome. Meetings are normally for a full day 10.00am – 4.00pm (bring a packed lunch), with either a half-day(bring a packed lunch), with either a half-day talk, occasionally a full day workshop, or a day spinning (or whatever textile project you have on the go), chatting and sharing knowledge, and rounded off with a cup of tea etc.

Whether you’ve been spinning and weaving for years or it suddenly takes your fancy to learn we are always delighted to welcome new members. We all love working with fibres and textiles, and thoroughly enjoy sharing our interest – and learning something new. It's just £5 to come along for the whole day - which includes tea and coffee.

History

The Guild was formed in 1961 as the Oxford Guild of Handloom Weavers. They met on Monday afternoons but it was disbanded in 1965 as membership dwindled. By 1971 however, there was new interest and 8 of the original members were joined by others with interests in spinning and dyeing and the Oxford Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers was born.

David Nutt has written four comprehensive pieces on the history of Guild from 1961 to 1999 which can be downloaded below.
